What are hemorrhoids?

Hemorrhoids – called bleeding nodules – are vascular structures located in the anal canal. They are surrounded by anal muscles (sphincters), which remain in a state of tension, causing blood stasis in the hemorrhoids and thus keeping the anus tight. During bowel movements, the muscles relax and the blood accumulated in the hemorrhoids is then drained. Pathological changes begin to appear when the outflow of blood is disturbed. As a result of blood retention, the nodules become swollen, and bulge outside or inside the anus, in addition, inflammation develops.
